CDDF President Attends Conference - Paris, France

President of CDDF, Prof. Kwabena M. Bosompem, presented a paper on “Control of parasitic diseases through school-based health education and de-worming: A five year activity in Ada-Foah, Ghana” at the ‘Xth European Multicolloquium of Parasitology’ Paris, France, August 24th – 28th, 2008.

The research work was conducted in collaboration with the West African Centre for International Parasite Control (WACIPAC) which is supported by Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA).

The presentation highlighted gains made in parasite control and showed data indicating rapid decline in the prevalence of Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) and Intestinal Worm Infections (Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis). The audience included scientists from all geographical regions. Discussions on the presentation focused on sustainability of the intervention and the success in promoting improved clinical and academic performance. Also, the audience were informed about the gains made in improved school attendance and enhanced enrollment. On the issue of sustainability, Prof. K. M. Bosompem explained the importance of the community centered approach promoted by CDDF in partnership with WACIPAC, the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Valta Basin Research Project (VBRP), the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) and in close cooperation with education, health and local government sectors.
